WINSTON-SALEM — In an overtime thriller, Farmville Central had a clean look at the potential game-winning shot as Chris Rhodes squared up for a jumper with just seconds left in the extra period. But the shot rimmed out and Reidsville would hold on for a dramatic 78-77 win in the 2024 2A NCHSAA state championship at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Saturday night.
Each squad collapsed on the floor following the game — in jubilation for the Rams, devastation for the Jaguars.
Reidsville finished the season at 29-0 — the third undefeated finish for the Rams program in state title years. They were unblemished in 1973 and 1994 as well.
The Rams got out to an early lead thanks to a deep 3-point basket by Dionte Neal, followed by a steal and two-handed jam by shooting guard Johnnyius Sharpe in the opening minute of the game as Reidsville went up 10-4 with 3:57 to go in the first quarter.
The Rams continued to score, extending the lead to 11 points, but Jaguars guard Mykal “MJ” Williams finished an untouched shot in the lane right before the buzzer to cut the Reidsville lead to 22-13 at the end of the first quarter.
A pair of Reidsville turnovers sparked a Jaguars run, aided by a couple of 3-point baskets by Williams to give his team their first lead of the game at 34-33. The Rams were able to even things up in the final second at 37-37 right before the half thanks to a late bucket by forward Al Lee.
Farmville Central (30-2) continued to push as the in the third quarter as the lead grew five points thanks to solid shooting by Hampton Evans. But a finish on the wing by Harrison and a fast break score by Neal tied the game once again at 50-50 with 3:24 to go in the third.
Alex Moye hit a 3-pointer at the top of the key to put Farmville Central back on top 53-50, but the Rams answered on the other end.
A 3-pointer by Neal tied the game at 53-53.
Reidsville would eventually go up 57-53 heading into the fourth period.
After more than a minute and a half of scoreless play, Farmville took a 57-56 lead on a shot by Evans, but a spin and finish by Harrison, followed by a steal by Neal and a dunk by Sharpe had the Rams up 61-56 with under five minutes to go.
The Jaguars would later cut the game to 61-60 on another Moye triple, but an off-balance 3-pointer by Sharpe let the Rams extend the lead to 64-60.
That one-to-two possession trend continued and it looked like Reidsville had things wrapped up. But a last-second 3-pointer MJ Williams drained at the top of the key tied the game at 70-70 sending it into overtime.
Heading down the stretch, both teams held the lead at one point, but a take in the lane by Neal gave Reidsville the lead setting up the final shot of the game.
Ultimately, the Rams got the bounce.
